Greetings All,

DrMoreau notified me as to TZ DZ Fan's discovery. I sent an email to FreeForumer and this was my reply:

Hello,

Recently there has been some problems with some of the ads displayed on our network. We have removed a specific provider of ads from showing and we believe this has fixed the issues users have been having. If there are anymore issues please let us know. Please note that providing both the screenshot of the ad, and the link that the ad leads to (which can be found by right clicking the ad and copy link location, or by viewing the source of the page) is needed.

Thank you,
-Jackal

---------

If anyone, including TZDZ or Whit, can provide this information as requested by Jackal, I am sure that they can further investigate and get this resolved. It appears to be a forum wide nuisance and not just on our board.

Phineas J. Whoopee

I was just redirected again about 45 minutes ago by simply clicking on a post.

PJW...I sent you a PM with the screenshot and the page source in a .zip attachment of this occurance.

I have not seen a re-occurance of the virus/trojan that I encountered yesterday afternoon, but I do remember its name. It was Downloader.MisleadApp.

As of 2:20 eastern this afternoon......... I was redirected again to a "blackpeoplemeet.com" page.

The address of that page is ~~~~~~~~~~> http://www.blackpeoplemeet.com/sign_up_free/index.cfm
This is the one I was directed to before.

I am assuming this is the one whit was also redirected to as well????

PJ or DrM - I was also in a "Fear Itself" thread a few minutes ago,(which I rarely enter) and I clicked on one of the videos for a minute.

I had another window/pop-up arise directly after doing that.

OK, now this is interesting.

When I "replied" to the last post here, when my screen refreshed (it normally shows you the post you just entered at the bottom of the thread), I was redirected yet again.

Freeforums has either been hacked or has decided to take anybody's money in exchange for ad space.

Greetings All,

The latest word from FreeForums techs are what DrMoreau and I had suspected. There is an underlying malicious jscript in one of the ads that are displayed on the FreeForums sites. Let me state this again, not just here at PtE but most FreeForums sites. They have yet to determine which ad it is though.

Until they have their priorities straightened out, please do the following.

IE users: Get an ad blocking or inline script blocking add-in. ( I strongly recommend switching browsers to Fire Fox or even Opera)

Fire Fox Users: Get the AdBlockPro Add-in.

I know the FF add-in is free and I have not experienced any of the problems reported here.

Opera Users: Send a PM to DrMoreau and he'll tell you how to do it, I have no idea.

Have Fun & Happy Posting,

Phineas J. Whoopee

As of 6:15 Eastern, there is a new banner that is coming across the board.

It simply reads "Seeing offensive ads? Click here"

That redirects you to this page, (which is a freeforums post concerning the ads and recent problems).

~~~~~~~~~~~~> http://forum.freeforums.org/viewtopic.php?p=295963
I hope that any member here that sees this post, will take the time to click that link and read the short post. It sheds a little light on what happened, not just to us, but on TONS of websites as well. All ads are removed until Monday.
I have not had any problems for at least 24 hours, hopefully most of this is resolved.
There have been several board access problems since March 19 or 20, 2009. Here is a link to FreeForums.org Tech page to explain it all. Nope - as always - it's not just us.
Well, I personally have had problems such as this on and off for a few months now, although not all the time.
I have only spoken up on occaision, if it really got out of hand, or the board was "down" for an extended period of time.
NOTE - - Many times in the early hours, the board is down, undergoing "maintenance", as the page reads, and if you check back in a few minutes for the most part it goes away.
This too has been happening here and there, for awhile.
I am probably one of a very few, that is often times here at 4 - 5 a.m. eastern, and even later, so typically many of you wouldn't even notice.
I have lost patience a bit here and there, but normally that passes.
I tend to think that all of the above problems are and were, the beginnings of the "platform upgrade", that has been promised for many months now.
I don't know as much as DrMoreau, he could probably better answer your questions.
He was instrumental in setting up this board, and knows all the background, perhaps much better than Phineas.
Hopefully when the board makes the final change, 99% of these problems will disappear.
Please remember, we are a much "newer style" board than some of our old haunts. We have quite a few more bells and whistles, different things and features we can add and change while posting, and essentially that also leads to more variables that can go wrong.
Yes, we have had some problems here and there, but it hasn't been too bad, in my opinion.
But, I hope that almost all of the above problems will soon vanish, once we change over to the new platform.
I'm not complaining thought, just curious if it is my imagination and glad it isn't!!
Well, I'm not glad it is acting up, but it is worth the wait!!
We can, or I can rather, sit tight for the changes to come and some slow moments in the meantime is just ok....
BUT NOT TOO MUCH!!! :evil: :x :shock:
Greetings All,
If anyone has experienced a slowdown and lag issue over the past two days, FreeForums.org is having a server script issue on one of their sites/servers and it has been a work in progress. They believe they have most of it resolved.
Greetings All,
Some of you may have noticed the "No Suitable Nodes" message when trying to access our site. According to FreeForums.org, this is caused by a server error and is affecting all or most FreeForums clients; not just us. As always, bare with them as they try to resolve the defect in their server.
No f@%king idea. Trust me, it is a bitch waiting to get busy. That's why PJ asked me to help out behind the scenes. All the fuss and endless waiting was giving him adgeda - lol.
A note to all members..............
I notified DrMoreau of this problem early Saturday night.
Very early Saturday morning, at about 8 am Eastern I was replying to a post in one of the threads, and I had a virus try and enter my computer through a "pop-up" elicited from one of the banner ads we have here on the board.
This may sound a bit confusing, but when I was "previewing" a reply I had made in a post, this virus/prompt appeared while my page was refreshing before the ad banner came up along the top of the page. It all happened in a split second.
Never in the history of the board have I heard of anything like this occurring.
Basically it prompted me to download and install an "EXE" file that was named something along the lines of "antivirusinstaller".
Be warned, this looked very legitimate. It essentially showed files and folders that are in everyones Windows, and said certain ones were infected, and in order to protect your computer, you should immediately download this program.
I tinkered with it for a minute, but never downloaded it, while I was trying to make heads or tails of what was going on.
Eventually I got it closed down, with no problems, and after running a few checks with Norton, everything is all clear on this end with no problems.
DrMoreau is familiar with this type of virus, and even knew it by name when I described it.
I have many times over the years seen a few odd things come up, but I have never been "fooled" by any of this type garbage.
This one almost got me though, let this serve as a warning to all the members here.
DrMoreau is convinced that the problem is mostly well known more to the people that still use "Internet Explorer", and thats what I currently use.
I had been planning on changing a while back, but other things going on have sort of kept that a lower priority.
I do not know how many here still use "Internet Explorer", but offhand I think at least a few of us still do.
Regardless of which browser any of us use, we should still look into the root of this problem, and see what can be done about it.
I am hoping that within the next 24-48 hours, one of us can contact "freeforums", and see what we can dig up on this.
TZ DZ fan
Please be aware - I have encountered this problem 2 times within the last 24 hours.
I have quoted my earlier warning about this virus above.
It looks to be a reappearance of this "windows virus" that we had some issues with early this year.
I did notice that there wasn't as much traffic on the board here last night, but I hope this has nothing to do with it.
If anyone else has had a similar problem in the last few days, please let us know here.
I am guessing its just something coming from the ads, and tinkering with Internet Explorer once again.
Typically, this has happened in the past from the ads - that we have no control over - being hijacked. It is most notable with IE browser but does appear to have been reported with Firefox users.
What can you do? 1st off - don't click on any suspect popup window. Especially if you have an Anti-virus software already running. Get us a screen shot, day and time so we can notify Freeforum.org of issue and possible source.
How to take a Screen Shot = Ctrl+PrntScrn keys and post it in MSPaint, etc, and save file. Post, PM or email this info.
As always, upgrade your ad blocking software and/or switch to a browser with less vulnerabilities than IE.
The web has been infested again with The Green Antivirus Malware and other similar crap. In most cases, it is easy to prevent infection by not clicking on the ad, having an uptodate AV software, and anything other than IE.
If you suspect activity, open task manager from task bar or using Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys. Look for GAV.exe (Green Anti Virus) or similar file running, and end task. If you keep getting pop-ups, there is another file - usually MS###32.exe, end task on it as well. (Remember - these are example names, real files may differ. If you are unsure, take it to someone who can better assist you in determining files.)
Go to windows explorer screen - NOT IE but Windows Explorer - Click on Tools/Folder Options and on the 2nd tab (VIEW) scroll down and click the "Show Hidden Files and Folders."
Go To Start/Run and type in MSCONFIG. On the screen that comes up, look for GAV or similar items and uncheck these from starting up. If you look in the righthand side - you will see the path of the program. Write that down. Apply and save - it will ask to reboot, when it does, use the F8 key prior to Windows opening and boot into SAFE MODE. {Not Safe Mode with Network} Once in safe mode, go to Program Files and find that folder, confirm that it is the Malware and delete the entire folder. Now, empty your recycle bin to permanently get rid of it, and reboot computer. You should be ok. Run complete scan with Norton/Kaspersky/AVG etc on reboot.
Note: Whenever you use MSCONFIG and change Startup profile, it will display a notification popup reminding you that you have changed startup files. This is normal. Click the box on lower left "Do Not Show this Message Again" and you will be ok.
Hope it helps.
Greetings All,
As a FireFox user, I have never witnessed any of the above described problem; probably due to the fact I have an Adblocking software. However, this doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist, just that I have not been able to see them.
As DrMoreau stated, please get a screen capture and any pertaining information so that we can submit it to freeforum.org's support team.
Have Fun & Happy Posting,
As of 5:40 a.m. eastern, the board (I assume) has been upgraded/changed over.
All would be merry, except there were many problems logging in the first time, including having to get a new password.
Plus the lovely little fact that it seems there is no way yet, to access our profiles, so we are stuck with one skin of light blue. (similar to the old joint, which I don't care for)
The chatroom is now closed/unoperable, I assume it will have to be new code written for that.
Be patient folks............ I will PM the appropriate parties, and hopefully this will be the last of the major problems for us.
Sorry to hear, LoBo. I found several members who were in your straights. I tried to resolve - without success - but was able to pin down our PMG - Phineas - and he resolved the issue for everyone. You should be good now.
Nope - you should be able to create a signature by default. I tried out your permissions and it allowed me to modify my own, so I can only assume it may be a cookie issue.
Click on "Delete all cookie set by board" on bottom of Index page or - Click Here -
This will erase the existing cookies and make you resign in with a clean slate. You may have some left over credentials from the older version 2.0 that are still residing and not associated with the 3.0 settings.
Let me know if that fixes it.
Oversized Fonts and Tags in Reply and New Topics:
Since yesterday around 3:00 PM, we have had some posting issues with skins. This has been reported by lots of Forum boards all over FreeForum, so, as usual, we are not alone. Here is a list of working and not working styles/skins.
These styles have Oversize Problem:
Getaway Green {Our Default Style}
Blue Moon
Chronicles
Milky Way
Rainbow Pearl
Skymile Red
PtE_Dark
PtE_AluminumJade
No NewPost or Reply Button:
ProNight
These styles work fine:
Subsilver 2
ProSilver
Avalon
Aero Red
X-Treme Blue/Green
Black Blood
PtE_Xtreme_Green
PtE_DarkJade
Hopefully, this will get resolved soon by FF.
Just a helpful note, FreeForums had a server error earlier today that made the board load really slow and produced the notorious "No Suitable Nodes" error. Everything appears to be fine now - fingers crossed and knock on wood - and we should be in good shape again.
I've noticed for the last week or so, the board has been running slower, like it takes a while to load pages, was speaking to TZ DZ Fan just and he's noticed the same thing too.
Yes, all my slow problems started right around the time of the toolbar/new chat feature.
I am not saying this is to blame, but I am betting theres a good chance its related. Often my toolbar is very slow loading (comparatively) as well.
OK - I disabled the chat bar - does that help?
Seems to have helped me as well.
I will be back in the early morning hours, and I will let you know if anything else changes on this end.
Hmm, as fun as that chat bar was, I would agree that I think that its possible the place was moving slower.
Board is back up now. Damn SQL Errors.
I don't know what happened. I am guessing that there was a server issue because our database was heavily fragmented. Long story short, after running SQL repair and 3 hours later, we are back up.
Have Fun & Happy Posting,
