Scarlet Street (1945)

Middle-aged amateur painter Christopher Cross protects a young woman, Katharine March, from an assault on the street by a young man without knowing that he is her lover. Damn I spent a while downloading this a couple of weeks ago, not realising it was here all along :( lol. I really liked it, Edward G Robinson is great as always, and Dan Duryea makes a very good sleazy villain, with Joan Bennett not far behind him. It makes a fine companion piece to Woman in the Window, with the same director and lead performers.

9/10

Yep, on 2nd thoughts my original rating of 8 was too low, so I've changed it to an 9.

Good call, again, Ror.

This is one of the many movies I cite as reference "why" Fritz Lang was great director. Sure - everyone instantly thinks of "Metropolis" when Lang's name is stated - but his noir work was wonderfully crafted and captivating. M, Blue Gardenia, The Woman in the Window, Big Heat, Ministry of Fear, and the Dr. Mabuse series is just noir at its best. Over shadowed by Hitchcock? Most definitely. His reputation and being German during the time most of his best work was released didn't help either - but the man knew how to get a performance and shoot a scene with uncompromising clarity.

Speaking of Metropolis, I watched the newly restored cut at an arthouse cinema a few months ago, it was cool, but yeah Lang was deffo an underrated director.
