The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Episode: 1 -The Vulcan Affair

UNCLE agent Napoleon Solo is assigned to foil an assassination plot by Thrush.

It was much more than a spy show. Producer Norman Felton got the Rights to Ian Fleming's character, Napoleon Solo, shortly before Fleming died. Oddly, the Solo character was killed in the Goldfinger novel, and was a crime czar.

The new Solo was head of Section II, Enforcement and Operations, for a shadowy organization that had its headquarters in a futuristic steel building hidden inside a crumbling NYC brownstone.

The United Network Command for Law and Enforcement used its global reach with Russian agents like Illya Kuryakin to stop a stateless group called The Technical Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity--THRUSH for short.

THRUSH would use all manner of SF weapons and schemes to advance its goal. These included death rays, androids, and robots (Ideal's "Robot Commando" toys launched real missiles at UNCLE agents; smaller Japanese battery-operated tin walking robots menaced them, too).

There was the futuristic UNCLE car, the odd THRUSH rifles--even the UNCLE guns later changed from Solo's real-life Lugar-with-rifle enhancements to something a bit more exotic.

One episode showed L.A.'s Griffith Observatory as a secret THRUSH base.

Ahead of it time--especially its theme of fighting state-less enemies of freedom (THRUSH was a satrap with no home country)--The Man From UNCLE kicked off the spy craze on television with a decidedly SF slant.

Many toys, games, trading cards, comix and a series of paperbacks came out. I have quite a few of them, including Solo's gun with rifle attachments and the 54 mm plastic Marx figures.
