Anyone here know when the TZ marathon tradition on New Years began? Seems like it's been going on a long time. Those above are Eastern times, I wager. For West Coast, I will begin at 10:30 AM with The Shelter. Yeah! :D

Although, The Fear may be a good time to begin also - 9:30 AM

Are you going to watch any tonight or tomorrow? I've been switching back and forth between this and the UFC marathon on Spike. I hope to catch a few episodes after the countdown. Although Night of the Meek is hardly something I want to catch at 2:30

Made it home a little early - just in time for 'The Obsolete Man'. Yeah, I'll watch as many as I can, but will probably take some breaks and watch other stuff (i.e. DVDs). I love 'Night of the Meek', but yeah, it's best on Christmas Eve/Day (which I believe it did air on Christmas morning). Enjoy whatever you watch bro!

SyFy continues to be morons. Not only did they not air 'What I Need' on Christmas Day, but they didn't even put 'The Four of Us Are Dying' in today's rotation. It's the series' 50th anniversary to the day!!! Be a little intelligent here.

I am watching I am the Night-CMB" right now. I love Zone Marathons.

IATN- SPOILER>>>>>

IATN is truly a bleak episode. The sulleness and moodiness of the actors sets the tone ( no pun intended).

Alot of the characters are 1 dimesional in their motivations and their emotions. Their hate is sickening, choking the city.

I really like the Sheriff here, his speech at the foot of the stairs was a nice break down of reality.

Also, I love how the Reverend tells the inmate to NOT return the hate, that is a classic line, imho.

----------------------------------------
1 Q, What do you think the Reverend meant, paraphrasing here, when he says ' The minority must have died on the cross?'

See, the inmate says that the Reverend is in the majority when he calls the inmate "gulity", so I am guessing that he thinks the minority is
the opposite of the majority, hmmm, thus I guess that means calling him "innocent" is the minority.
So is he saying that the 'one who died on the cross' would have called him 'innocent'? I highly doubt this.

Sorry if I did not understand this scene better.

Thanks in advanced,

>>>> End Spoiler

Wish I could offer you some insight, Mr. Z, but I was half-asleep during the 2nd half of that episode (I am the Night, CMB) and didn't catch much of the dialog or the innuendos of the scene. I watched almost ALL of Friday's episodes and am pretty burned out now.

But, at least I made it to the end of the marathon; I'm halfway through The Bard now but, being really-dozing-off now, will probably switch off before the ending - the schedule for my area lists this one as the last episode of the marathon, which means it does not have the last two episodes on the list above. Dunno what that means..

STEEL and YOUNG MAN'S FANCY are on Sunday morning. Although not part of the marathon, they are close enough with their regular viewing time as I can see why they were omitted.

Hope it helps,

DrM

Kapt, thanks for yor kind response, If you get a chance please rewatch IATN, its unfortunately not a fan favorite, but Its always in my top favorites, even with the above confusing scene.
If I understand that scene right, which is: 2 wrongs do not make a right; basically, killing an alledged racist murderer, without due process, is not justifiable, then this is a true Zone classic.

I am in the minority on The Bard too, I think its a deep episode which exposes the media industry truthfully. I hope you got to see the ending.

Congrats for watching the Zone Marathon, hope you enjoyed it, Happy New Year again.

Merci Dr. M for clarifying that.

Z

So now that the marathon is over I am suffering from TZ withdrawal and it is bad. I get so hooked keeping the television on all day that when its over it just sucks.

A few news and notes from this years New Years Marathon. They said 46 hours of Twilight Zone with rarely seen footage. Now of course when they said that I automatically assumed it was the scenes that are never in syndication. I was wrong. During the prime time episodes I guess from around 9pm to midnight I saw a short little commercial for the Danny Thomas show. It showed a family of about 6 or 7 sitting around a dinner table. It was in black and white and obviously a commericial that aired during the original run of the twilight zone...this brings up a few questions that I have...

First....What the f*ck?

Second....What the hell?

Third...uh? I am surpised they threw in this "rarely seen footage" Quite a suprise.

Yeah I always like to have it on in the background too, and actually watch some from time to time. Of course, there were periods where my wife wanted to watch something else, so I missed quite a bit. Plus, I needed sleep and couldn't watch deep into the night. Though, I could easily change the channel just to see which episode was airing and I would know exactly what would happen next.

It's funny though, because now that I've seen TZ over and over again, I can go for long periods without watching. However, like you SVB, when it's on I'm sucked into the 'Zone' and it's all I want to watch. There were episodes that my wife recognized and enjoyed watching too, which is cool. They continue to show ads for the Definitive Collection, air uncut episodes, and show some show bumpers. I missed the commercial you referred to though.

I still can't believe they didn't air 'The Four of Us Are Dying' on New Year's Day -- disgraceful.

Mr. Z - thanks for the congrats. Yes, I lost myself in the Zone on Friday and part of Thursday - some of the enjoyment for me was waiting to see what was the next episode. I looked at DrMoreau's list above but did not memorize it. So, most of the time, I wouldn't know what was coming up next. To me, that's part of the attraction of this marathon; the last time I got into this TZ marathon this much was probably 6 or 7 years ago.

As for the rare footage, I thought that was the introductions by Rod Serling to the next episode that they ran a few times. But, I could be wrong... :?

Also, by the time I got to the end of it, I felt like I had watched almost all TZ episodes, but there were only 46 in the marathon; that's over 100 episodes NOT in this marathon :o -whoops, check that; 46 hours - so about 90 episodes? still leaves 65 or so others.

Kapt., As you may know, the TZ ran for 156 episodes, 157 episodes if one includes 'The Time Element'.

Please check this Wikipedia TZ episode listing out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twilight_Zone_Episodes

They are organized by seasons. What I did was write down all the episodes on a list, then check the ones off that I watched. I am guessing you did
this with the 79 Star Trek TOS Episodes.

Youtube has several TZ episodes up and also CBS.com has the first 3 seasons of TZ up, wish they put up the 4th and 5th, we can only pray, here they are:

http://www.cbs.com/classics/the_twilight_zone/index.php

Also, you may or may not be interested in ' The Twilight Zone Companion' written by Marc Scott Zicree, if you have not seen this book already.
Just know that the author is very biased on some episodes. . Last thing I should mention, he has spoiled a few episodes for some fans before they watched certain episodes,
so perhaps best to get this book after you have seen most episodes, or read only about the episodes you have not seen.

Happy TZ New Year

Z

Thanks for the info, Mr. Z; I didn't have a list in front of me but I was pretty close: I figured the marathon showed about 90 episodes, leaving 65 not shown, so that's 155 total. (Off by one or two) I've always just wondered how they select the 60% or so of the episodes for the marathon or is it just random?

I think I've seen all the TZ episodes at one time or another; it's just a question of when. Obviously, episodes not included in marathons for a long time or missed by me have not been seen by me in years. But, I'm pretty sure I've seen 'em all at least once. (even the one with Neville Brand & George Takei) This is to be expected - I mean, I first started watching various episodes about 35 years ago.

I do have Zicree's Twilight Zone Companion - a neat book. The first edition was way back in 1983 I think.
I am curious about "The Time Element" now, however - do not remember that one; will have to look that up.

Merci good Dr.,

I do not know why I forgot to mention what you wrote, so sorry.

Kapt, glad you have the book.

I do not know how they select them either, I wish they would poll us here, alas.

Peace

OK, I just watched it; dunno why, but I couldn't find the thread yesterday, even though it was right in front of me. This 'origin of TZ' episode is also written about in Zicree's Twilight Zone Companion but I last read that portion about 25 years ago and forgot all about it.

Anyway, watched the whole episode; very interesting. I don't believe that I've ever seen it before. Very good choice for a video on this site....

Thanks, Kaptain. I've always enjoyed the "Time Element" myself. When comparing it against "Where is Everybody?" as a Show/Season premier episode, it's hard to say which one was better for different reasons.

As for Zicree - I appreciate his background and leg work, just not his reviews. Over the years, I debated many people who quoted his opinions chapter and verse. My typical response has always been, "Well, I know that Zicree feels that way, but what is your opinion? Have you ever sat down and analyzed and examined it for yourself?" If I had a nickel for every slumped head and reply of "no" I could almost retire. Almost. I know a fellow, over at "That Other Joint", that could probably give Mr. Zicree a run for his money, and whose opinions are probably closer to the actual truth than Zicree's - but, since I no longer play in that sandbox, and I doubt he'd ever post here - I'll leave it at that.

Kapt, my favorite episode is WIE?, I feel its a story about all of us on our journey thru life. I feel it mirrors Maslov's heirarchy of needs to some degree, for starters. I feel its rich witha multiple of deep thinking topics.
That said, I still think The Time Element is a fine episode worthy of much praise. I am glad you likd it.

Dr. M, I am wih you, Zicree is not written in stone, he is not the end all be all, we should not listen to him blindly.
I personally disagree with Mr. Zicree on most of his opinions. Sorry, Mr. Zicree.
I feel he is too harsh on too many episodes I would call underrated, and on some episodes he monopolizes too much time, imho.

I have made a thread( long ago ) asking Zone Fans to contribute to a 'Fan Based TZ Episode Guide', which in my mind makes more sense, so that we can high light the classics, The Signtaure episodes, and showcase the underdogs in their positive light. To attract more viewers. Unfortunately, it did not pan out, alas, mayhaps one day.

Conversely, The TZ Companion, imho might detract some viewers with its diatribes and vitriol; acidic verbioge is not needed.

I love the discourse here at PTE on episodes, as I am sure most of us do :D
Kapt and Dr. M, your commentaries in theTZ section are refreshing, Zone thanks.

I still have my father's original first edition copy of the companion. It is so worn out, god only knows what it's been through. (Well I have some idea, because I keep around with me during nearly every marathon. So many episodes

I bought the original Companion many years ago for $7.00 from a Detroit used book store. I read and reread this book, and added so many notes in it, most of which were disagreements with the author, it tore off from the bind.

I had an episode guide from the TZ magazine too, loved that.

I purchased a new TZ Companion, its sitting next to my definite edition Zone DVD sets.

Yes, I believe that a "2nd edition" of the book came with the Definitive Twilight Zone DVD set of season #1.

The newer edition contained some pages on the Eighties TZ series. I think that's the only difference, but I could be wrong...

I was always very interested in Dan's opinions on classic TV. That guy knows his stuff.

As far as I know, what you have wrote is on money. He [ Zicree ] had many years to update what he wrote, and did not, thats unfortunate.

I admire his behind the scenes approach, yet it always annoyed me that he did NOT do enough to address the concepts, the themes, and the meanings
of the episodes ( even if he did not know what the episodes may have meant, he could give more insight into what he thought they meant).

( His synopse on "The Lonely" left me wanting so much more, for example).

I feel a new book is needed to delve into the scope of the TZ: socio-political commentary, its concepts, and its meanings, for starters.

I agree. What set DH apart from the rest, was not only his knowledge of the series,(which many of us have) but also his ability to post clear/easy to read thoughtful opinions , and he was willing to back them up with his own reasons.

The problem with many people's approach to writing a book such as Zicree's TZ Companion, is that its a "labor of love" for many. Simply put, its typically a subject they really like and are close to, so when they choose to do a book such as that, their personal opinions tend to come out a bit too much.
This is very apparent in Zicree's book.

This being said...........
I did like reading his (Dan Hollis) posts and opinions..... but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate everyones posts, including the ones here.
Everyone has differing viewpoints I can appreciate, some of us are just a bit lazy on posting them. :D

Mr. TZ DZ,

Excellent points about the TZ companion. Your lucidity and astute commentary knows no bounds. It is indeed a 'labour of love" to undertake this task, I will give Mr. Zicree that much.
IMHO, a book of this magnitude virtually summons bias. The companion was laden with this bias, I felt Mr.Zicree gave more negatives reviews then positives.

That being said, I have presented a thread ( back in the day) of 'what if several TZ fans wrote a favorable companion', wherein, Zone fans who have positive feelings about certain episodes write about those episodes they like. Yes, bias is abound, however, in this case its positive bias to help attract more people to the Zone then detract them, as may be the case in Mr.Zicree's book.

I also had : the 'fair and balanced' critique fan book thread too, wherein, I asked fans who wanted to write negative commentary to add on as well, just as long as there is positive commentary on that certain episode.

Would you join in on a book like one of the above? Do you like these ideas? May I ask, how would you have written the Companion?

Thanks for any further feedback :D 8)

Why didnt anybody announce that there was a Twilight Zone marathon on this 4th of July? I didn't find out until halfway through it when I got home past 9pm Sunday night. Had no idea they were even going to do it on 4th of july anymore after that debacle last year with that stupid ass show from the 80s. I didn't see posts on here at all...unless I missed it.

Dude, good call. I totally forgot last year there was no marathon. I honestly went into the weekend expecting one and checked the syfy website to confirm. Didn't even think about posting a reminder here. Sorry about that. This marathon was pretty solid -- I have to double check but I think my entire top 20 got aired over the 2 days.

Rod Serling's awesome anthology series "The Twilight Zone" unlocked the door to another dimension with the key of imagination, and now it's your turn to step through and cast your votes for your favorite episodes to help Syfy pick the "Top 40" of the eps it will air during the network's annual New Year's Eve/Day marathon, which starts December 31st.

For this year’s annual New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day "The Twilight Zone" marathon (beginning at 9AM on Saturday, December 31, 2011, and running throughout Sunday, January 1, 2012), Syfy.com will take fans into that dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity with the first ever Viewer's Choice poll to select the all-time favorite "Top 40" episodes of the iconic series.

Episodes 40-21 will air on December 31st from 2:00 PM-12:00 Midnight, while Episodes 20-1 will air on January 1st from 2:00 PM-12:00 Midnight.
