Othello, pretty fun game, thanks DrM. It reminds me slightly of Pente, just the gems, on a grid, i.e.

I grew up with Othello, but Pente is even better, especially since there are no edges (Othello devolves into competition for the corners), and since there are two different ways to win in Pente (five in a row or capturing five pairs). I haven't heard about Pente much, so it's cool to see that you mentioned it... even if it took me a year and a half to find this post.
