Pretty good tune. Sounds a lot like Linkin Park. Don't know if that is a good or bad thing to you, but that's the impression I got. I also got an early Muse vibe off it, during the verse mainly. I have some AFI around here somewhere...I can't say I'm very familiar with them, though.

I hit prime drinking age right when Hair Metal got huge, so I listened to a lot of it. Most of it was silly and too processed, and I hardly ever listen to it anymore. On that note...and I can't believe I am admitting this, but the music subscription service I use suggested that I listen to Winger's 1988 debut album. I clicked on it and Wow! these guys can really play! Then I realized that I actually own the damn thing on CD!

Once you get past the asinine lyrics, the musicianship is outstanding and it flirts with progressive rock just enough to make the hooks keeps the songs engaging.

I can't stand Kip Winger gyrating around in this video, but if you listen (music starts at around :30), there is some awesome guitar work, especially at about the halfway mark. If this is something you like, the album is an excellent example of the "hair-a"...I mean, era.

Sweet! That comparison to Linkin Park isn't a bad thing to me -- I saw Linkin Park when they first started for a whopping $.92! They were on the ticket when 92.3 K-Rock (here in NY, now doesn't exist - a damn shame) offered their 92-cent shows. I loved seeing bands for dirt cheap. To see them for that price, knowing how huge they are now, selling out stadiums and arenas is pretty mind-boggling. I also like the band Muse, so both are nice comparisons. Funny, I didn't really think of either when I heard this song or album. They actually gave me a Depeche Mode vibe.

I got a much heavier feel from the song than you did then.

I know what you mean about cheap shows, but I haven't seen anything that cheap for an eternity.

Indulging my Power Pop addiction, I recently paid $75 to see Cheap Trick at a small venue (about 1000). They were great and they have such a great catalog of songs. Also went to see Fountains of Wayne for $50 a while ago. They were also good, but the lead guitarist was wasted. I talked to him for a minute after the show and my god, I have no idea how he stayed on his feet. He wouldn't shut up and I kind of gave him the "ok...whatever dude...later". The two main guys (Collingwood and Schlesinger) appeared to be stone sober. Weird. Good pop band, though.

Oh, don't get me wrong, 'I Hope You Suffer' is a very heavy song, especially compared to the rest of the album. It's my favorite track on Burials primarily because of the anger, the darkness and how "heavy" it sounds. So yes, in terms of that nature then it would compare more to Linkin Park than Depeche Mode. I think my reference to Depeche Mode is heard more on a couple of their other tracks, plus I think the look of the band reminds me of Depeche Mode back in the 80s. If you watch the other videos I posted from AFI, you can see how their look changed. They had a "horror punk" appearance over the last 10 years up until this album.

Fountains of Wayne - nice! Damn $50 sounds like a lot for them too but then again, different times. I saw them while at college, they played at Rutgers and I believe it was around $20-$25 for the ticket. Definitely a good show. This is pre-"Stacy's Mom". I absolutely love their very first album, which I heard their first single or two on 92.3 K-Rock back in the day. My favorite song was 'Sink to the Bottom'. Ahhh, the good ol' days....

Awesome track indeed. My brother loves this band. I never really got into them, but they're on my iPod, so I get to listen to them from time to time.

Really like your Billy Talent call out. Here's another great Billy Talent tune:

I've always loved the shite out of this! If you like, seek out the band Let Go (it won't be easy). Great start-and-stop Rock!

Back in the late '90s/early '00s, I created a streaming website awkwardly named "Whitsbrain" (back before stuff like Pandora). I heard about a band in Minneapolis named "The Stereo" led by a guy named Jamie Woolford. I added their music to my website's rotation and just loved their hooky, heavy sound.

Jamie moved to Pheonix and The Stereo disbanded. He then formed "Let Go" which upped the ante and is one of the finest, catchiest Pop-Rock albums I've ever heard. Actually, I've taken to calling it "Start-and-Stop" Rock as I want to coin a phrase at some point in my life. ;)

This style of music is often dismissed by critics as derivative and lacking social messages. But I love the stuff. It's nothing but fun to crank up, sing along with, and it's not real tough to slam out the power chords to.

So opinion piece aside, "Let Go" only put out this one record. Last year, Jamie released an all new, full-length solo CD titled "A Framed Life In Charming Light". And it's fantastic!

You can purchase his music, including the lone "Let Go" CD at his website:

Very cool! Yes I noticed you had posted one of his songs in your "name" thread. I like the coined phrase, BTW, I get what you mean by it, and I like that sort of thing too.

Most people that like Rock would enjoy it. They just don't take the time to explore new music.

I like this. Plenty heavy. But I'm not a big fan of female metal singers.
