with the inspiration of the Fleetwood Mac question, i have to ask the same about Jefferson Starhip/Starship...do we like Mickey Thomas or Grace Slick best?? or as a duet? or Marty Balin?

this applies ONLY to Thomas, Slick, and Balin.. and not Jefferson Airplane.

to me, Balin sang with the better songs while Slick and Thomas sang the bigger hits either as solo lead or as a duet. i never cared for Slick. so i will go with Balin.

Dragon Fly & Red Octopuss were their best albums.

Balin!

Now I am a die hard Grave Slick fan, and one of my regrets is I never got to see her perform live and every time I hear one of their songs, I get bummed she retired.....on the other hand, the song Miracles always takes me back to a time in my life that was changing drastically (I was around 12-13 when it came out) and it always reminds me of happy times.....plus I always loved Balin's vocals too. Incidentially, he (Balin) was touring last year with Paul Kantner and then he bowed out for vocal problems and I was so bummed and haven't heard when they will do that again......sucks getting old!

nope. i never heard one song by Jefferson Airplane that i liked. so that is why i worded the question as i did.
i like a lot of stuff by Jefferson Starship and Starship....mostly songs WITHOUT Grace Slick. she just does me no thrills...

guess you can call it "poster's choice" :D

Yes, but it's the same band. Jefferson Starship was originally Jefferson Airplane. They even reunited for one more tour in 1991 after Bill Graham died, who I think was a famous concert promoter in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I mean, I'm not a big fan either, but you gotta include the original limeup in any poll because then you wouldn't have all the choices. So I go with Jefferson Airplane, as the original lineup is usually the best e.g. Van Halen with David Lee Roth until 1984 or an orignal movie as opposed to its remake.

Like Cyril, I'll abstain. I have to say however, that as time went on, 'Starshit' got worse, so I guess by default, that might make Grace my choice. But really, who cares?

true Anthony, they are the same band...but to me, Airplane sucked.
just like Motley Crue..i loved them for eons..and even when vince neil came back, i couldn't stand nothing else that came out by them...guess what i am saying is that even though it's the same band, the moment in time helps define that band.

just my opinion, as well.

I don't really remember much about this group, except hearing "We Built This City" shoved down my throat in the 1980s, a gazillion times.

One song I did like though, was "Jane".

I don't even remember if it was Starship or Airplane at that point. I believe it was Starship.
