Edgar Rice Burroughs 2nd most famous character after Tarzan finally gets his own film, plus it's Pixar's first live action movie too, looks a bit Avatar like, but hopefully the story will be much better.

Yeah, I think I prefer the second trailer, but that first one isn't too bad either.

If it anythings like Avatar, I want nothing to do with it. The graphics look pretty sick though.

I think with it being based on a classic sci-fi/pulp character it will prob have a much better story than Avatar, but that remains to be seen.

I want to get excited about this, but CGI is leaving me cold. It doesn't amaze me anymore.

I know what you mean, I'm hoping this will be a good sci-fi pulp adventure similar to Flash Gordon and the original Star Wars, with the Edgar Rice Burroughs connection it'd seem fair to hope for that but CGI seems to be killing the atmosphere out of everything these days, case in point; Avatar.

Then again, maybe it'll turn out good because it's Pixar, as they've had so much success with their animated films and the director/co-writer, Andrew Stanton, has done most of their finest,WALL·E, Finding Nemo and the first two Toy Story films.

CGI is amazing, when it's used to help a story along instead of hiding the fact that there is a weak or no story. :wtf:

A 10 minute clip from the start of the film. It's surprising they've released such a long clip on youtube. The book the film is based on, the first of the 'John Carter of Mars' series, is awesome and it looks like they've taken a few liberties with his backstory here, but it still looks promising.

Just come back from seeing it, and I must admit it was disappointing, mainly because it had a weak script that deviated far too much from the source material, but that aside aside it wasn't too bad, the visual effects and the look of it was impressive, it was even pretty well cast, just a shame they didn't stick closer to Edgar Rice Burroughs' great story.

Damn shame. The ERB books were quite enjoyable pieces of pulp. Much like Moorecock & Howard's stuff, I rated John Carter highly in my youth. Guess I'll wait for Blu-Ray.

Yeah I think that would be best. Even the over the top pulpy violence of the books was really toned down for the film, I think it would have been better if it hadn't been made by Disney.

Agreed, case in point of CGI being used to enhance a movie, not being overused:

Not necessarily a great movie, but looks like an enjoyable one for action and gore fans.
