I attended the Red Carpet Premiere of Godzilla on May 8 at the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Blvd.

This reset/retelling of the origin of Gojira stands far above the last awful attempt by American so-called writers (hacks, really). I'll write no spoilers in my rant here, so be at ease.

The film works well, for the most part, happily devoting much more than usual screen time to human characters. The well-written dialog is amazingly minus horrid grade school throw-away lines such as "I'll be back," so common in "action" (read mindless violence romp) movies the studio suits adore. The acting, especially the sadly under-used Bryan Cranston, is above average; Cranston is the high note and steals all the atoms from the cast.

The star of the film, Gojira (once more under his American AKA "Godzilla,") arrives a bit late in the production. His first screen appearance evoked loud cheers from the tony audience at the Dolby, many of whom must be life-long G Fans given their gusto. (Japanese fans have complained that he's a bit too portly in this latest version; you'll hardly notice.) The use of Godzilla in the film is well calculated otherwise. He delivers several surprises before the closing credits roll.

Gojira/Godzilla holds a special place in my mind. I have toys and models of him in every room of my house. Happily I can urge you to go see this latest adventure.

Thanks for the reccomendation JonnyDuffy. The 1998 American version of Godzilla really is awful so this release looks promising.

I know you said no spoilers but was there any indication of a sequel?...like in the credits perhaps? I can see this becoming a franchise in the future...

Nothing, zero, zip, nada made in Hollywood precludes the possibility of a sequel. Rest easy.

In the climate of today's LaLaLand, if it makes money then there WILL be a sequel. The motto of the LaLaLand Suits: "Always milk a cash cow to death. Then 're-imagine' and start again."

I saw Godzilla over the weekend and really liked it. I consider myself a Godzilla geek and have seen each movie several times. This latest film does the Godzilla film legacy proud. I'm going to see it again as soon as I can.
