Originally ran on ITV, Channel 3, in the UK from October 1967 to February 1968. In total there are 17 episodes: 0 ~ 16.

Our Hero & Protagonist, Number 6, played by Patrick McGoohan, is a former secret agent of the British government during the Cold War. He is never identified by name. There is no explanation as to the exact nature of his old job. What we do know ... after resigning from his former position, he is kidnapped and held prisoner in a small, isolated, eccentric seaside resort town known only as, "The Village."

The authorities in control of the Village (whose identity and allegiance are never made clear,) attempt to find out why he resigned. Throughout the series, Number Six attempts to escape while defying all attempts to break his will. He also tries to discover for which "side" his captors work and the identity of the mysterious "Number One" who presumably runs the Village.

Chuck full of sixties counter-culture, cold war paranoia, and stylish drama, this show was perhaps just a little ahead of its time.

Regular Cast:
    # Patrick McGoohan … Number Six
    # Angelo Muscat … The Butler
    # Peter Swanwick … Supervisor
    # Leo McKern … Number Two (A)
    # Colin Gordon … Number Two (B)

How many fans of The Prisoner do we have here? I remember back at the old 5thD board we had some great discussions about this awesome show. So, just how many fans do we have out there on this forum?

A friend of mine had all of these on DVD, and he absolutely swore by them.
Sadly, this is another that I haven't seen yet, but from all accounts it sounded very interesting.
Its been several years since I even talked about this show with him.

Anyone here care to give a little detailed information on this one?

This is a very interesting show! It's based on a retirement village for very secretive governmental workers. It's very thought provoking and different than most programs you will ever see. Some of the episodes have great twist endings. The Creeper definitely recommends this British Television Product.

The series was filmed in a real-life village that exists to this day, unchanged. Portmerion.

It's a couple of hours drive away from where I live.

If I think on, I'll try to post some photos from one of my visits there later on today . . .

Either way, it will be soon.

I wonder what is the significance of the man standing there reading from the book...????

If it is something tied directly to the episodes, I may not want to know if it means a spoiler.
Thats strictly a guess though.

Amazon.com is selling the complete series 40th Anniversary Edition for a low price of $49.99, which beats Best Buy's $74.99. The show only had 17 episodes, yet it's a 10-disc set. What's that about? 2 episodes per disc and a shitload of special features?

Yes... and lest you forget that they are all hour long episodes.

Went and checked yet another local Wal-Mart tonight, while picking up some groceries.
Unfortunately, I can't find it local, so I will just have to hit up amazon, and snatch it up from there.

Not to mention its much cheaper!
I think the complete set can be had chock full of extras, and a small book, for about $50.

Happened to stop in to Best Buy tonight, specifically looking for this set.

I know I have seeen it in there before, but tonight it was nowhere to be found.
I found out later tonight that some stores stock it, and others don't.

To Hell with it, I do know the complete set can be had on amazon for like $39 with free shipping,(I just checked) which seems to be far cheaper than anywhere else I have seen it actually. Hopefully next week I can pick it up.

A 6-part mini-series remake, starring Sir Ian McKellen as the evil Number Two, and James Caviezel as persecuted Number Six, is supposed to be coming out in 2009.

WOW!

I am not a huge fan of Caviezel, but this looks interesting.
I wonder how they are going to "wrap it up" this time around.
Not only that, for them not to use or even give McGoohan a small spot, would be insulting to him in my opinion.

I haven't researched it any though, and he may be included as far as I know.

Any other info would be appreciated.

Here is another piece of info I came up with this on "The Prisoner" remake.

Apparently Lennie James has signed on, and will have a role in it.
He is most well known for his great role in "Jericho". This is a definite plus having him on board.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Jericho' Star Finds New Home In 'The Prisoner'

Obviously, it takes a village to showcase Lennie James' talents. The star best known to genre fans for playing the enigmatic Robert Hawkins in CBS' "Jericho" will be starring in an American Movie Channel (AMC) remake of the classic 1960s show, "The Prisoner," according to Zap2it.com. This time, it won't be a town in the midwestern United States that will be the center of attention. Instead, James will play Number 147, who lives in a mysterious village where Number 6, a former spy played by Jim Caviezel, has been imprisoned. Also starring on the six-hour mini-series will be Golden Globe nominee Ruth Wilson, Jamie Campbell-Bower and Hayley Atwell. Bill Gallagher is writing the scripts for the program."The Prisoner" is being created by AMC in conjunction with British broadcaster ITV and Granada International. ITV owns the rights to the program.

Look for "The Prisoner" to air on AMC in 2009.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is another good reason to tune in to this one.

Not only is there a poster on the page, but theres also a little 3:30 minute clip "special preview" of the upcoming remake.

Theres Ian McKellen, Jim Caviezel, and even Lennie James, who in one part says "We are playing a slight game of deceit with the audience".

This is sounding much more interesting now.

I just recently brought my friend "Malarcanus" to the board, and he is a huge "Prisoner" fan.
More than likely he will be posting in this section quite a bit soon.

Seeing as its been so long since I have seen any of these, I think I will rewatch the series shortly, starting from the beginning.

It was rather enjoyable, and I look forward to seeing it again.

For all interested:

Amazon.com is holding a one-day special on the new release of the complete series of 'The Prisoner' (original) in a new collector's edition. I'm sure you all who have seen the original probably already own the 40th anniversary set released 3 years ago. But I figured for those who do not have it, today is the time to buy this newly released set. The list price is $70, but today, amazon is having a 60% off sale -- I just put my order in at a ridiculously cheap $28.99 (which beats the $53.99 for the 40th anniversary edition release). Happy hunting!
