This was a fine episode that finally begins to deal with the the members of the village. Until this episode, we got to see #6 dealing with only the plants #2 has setup. Here we get to see #6 actively identifying Villager from Operative.

The game of chess is a great backdrop for this episode. It sets the tone and pace of the episode nicely. Good choice in casting really help sells this for me. Peter Wyngarde as #2, how f@%king cool is that? And Denis Shaw as the Shopkeeper of The Village Foods Store is back from The Arrival.

A definite 9 or 10 score episode. One of the best thus far - so I'll determine my final score upon completion of the series.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on that, for sure. I just watched this one this afternoon, in fact. I really like the final shot with Muscat placing the Queen's pawn back on the chessboard. Very symbolic, even for THIS show! I give Checkmate a solid eight on the 1-10 scale.

My favorite of the "early episodes".

The human chess element is kinda cool, especially when it means grave consequences for the "losing pieces".

Nice little twist at the end. Not a shocker, but good nonetheless.

Wild, but a good one.

8.

I agree with you guys -- this one was a delight to watch. So much better than the past couple of episodes.

Now here's something interesting -- I just noticed at the top of the page that this is episode 8. Yet, my DVD set, the new complete series set released in 2009 by A&E, has this as episode 4! I've been watching in order on the DVD set which was as follows - 1. Arrival, 2. Free For All, 3. Dance of the Dead, 4. Checkmate. In looking in order of episodes aired, I'm all over the map. Am I losing continuity at all?? Or are these fairly individual episodes with the common theme of #6 trying to escape?

8!

I've discovered, with the exception of "The Arriva,l" "Once Upon A Time," and "Fallout" it's all a matter of choice - pecking order wise.

According to sources, McGoohan wanted this to be a (7) episode season. Of course, ITC, Financiers, etc got involved and made it into a 17 episode series. Even McGoohan acknowledged the 7 of choice are the true meal and the rest is just filler.

The McGoohan Order:

1) Arrival
2) Free For All
3) Dance of the Dead
4) Checkmate
5) The Chimes of Big Ben
6) Once Upon a Time
7) Fall Out

Ok great -- looks like I'm watching in appropriate lines then. Thanks for the info Dr. M!
