Episode: 21.1 - Green Fingers

"For the horticulturists amongst you, here's a dandy. A lady who plants things and then steps back and watches them grow. Roses, rhododendrons, tulips ... and things never before to be found coming out of the ground - just put in. The subject of this painting has Green Fingers."

Original Air Date: January 5, 1972
Cast: Elsa Lanchester, Cameron Mitchell, Michael Bell, George Keymas
Writer: Rod Serling {Based on a short story by R.C. Cook.}
Director: John Badham

Michael J. Saunders is a self made man - he has the Midas Touch some would say. He worked his way up from the streets to the top of an empire that is ever expanding. Expanding in this case in the form of factories. Huge, monstrous, black smoke belching compounds of sweat and production. The only thing that stands in Saunder's way is one small cottage, filled with a lovely garden, tended to by Mrs. Lydia Bowen. Mrs. Bowen has no intention of moving and leaving her cottage or her garden. A garden she maintains from nothing to beauty - because she has that proverbial green thumb; more precisely, green fingers.

9. 4 out of 5. Good story, cool ending, a little slow in spots is all that keeps me from giving this one a perfect rating.

Great cast, damn fine story, sweet sweet revenge. Elsa, Cameron and a walk in by the Leader - George Keymas - this is classic. "You know what ya get when you plant ..."

Cameron Mitchell was also in my favorite monster plant MOVIE, "Maneater of Hydra." Which was directed by Mel Welles, who had played Mr. Mushnik in "Little Shop of Horrors." There must be some kind of weird typecasting when it comes to monster plant stories.

Good point. It is interesting to watch the little niche actors acquire alone their career.

I really liked "Green Fingers". Elsa Lanchester is sweet as the old lady but turns terrifying in the episode's final scene. Cameron Mitchell is a total scumbag and the fact that he pretty much loses his mind is a fine final outcome.

My Rating: 9 - Excellent

I love the old lady and the idea of her 'gardening talent'. A great 9 from me.

I just saw it again. One clever thing is that the characters aren't very simple. For one thing, Elsa Lanchester assumes Cameron Mitchell was some kind of spoiled rich kid, but he tells her he got rich in the "up by the bootstraps" way instead (not that that makes him more likeable).

And of course there's the third main character. You keep expecting him to rebel completely, but he never does. But he also doesn't mind telling Mitchell how he admires Lanchester, and what he really thinks of HIM.

Somehow it took me till the last time I saw it to really notice all those weird versions of "Greensleeves" on the soundtrack.
