Jonny Quest aka The Adventures of Jonny Quest was developed for television and ran on ABC {American Broadcasting Company} during the 1964-65 television Season. In total, 26 episodes were produced and shown on Fridays at 7:30 PM and later on Thursdays in the same time slot. The show was created by Doug Wildey under the production/direction of William Hanna & Joseph Barbera. Unlike their other prime time animated series: The Flintstones, The Jetsons, & Top Cat, this was the first Hanna-Barbera series to show a more realistic depictions of humans and used intricate artwork. The stars of the show were 10 year old Jonny Quest, his father Dr. Benton C. Quest, family bodyguard Roger T. "Race" Bannon, Jonny's best friend Hadji and Bandit the family dog.

The Quest Team would travel the globe and find adventure whether by choice or circumstance, rest assured, young Jonny was squarely in the middle of the action. From the Arctic to the Brazilian Rain forest and everywhere in between, Jonny Quest would fight villians with his fathers array of jet packs, hovercraft, lasers, and technical devices that would make 007 envious. With his skill in Judo and the assistance of his friend Hadji, any and all bad guys were no match.

The Jonny Quest Theme song is probably the best known animated score and was written and performed by Hoyt Curtin. Creator Doug Wildey wanted something that exuded excitement with heavy drums at its core. Without a doubt, Hoyt Curtin delivered. For those unfamiliar with either Jonny Quest or the theme, the video below contains the opening and closing themes as well as introduces our cast and crew.

Series Cast:

Jonny Quest: Tim Matheson
Dr. Quest: John Stephenson / Don Messick
"Race" Bannon: Mike Road
Hadji: Danny Bravo
Bandit: Don Messick

Noted Guests:

Dr. Zin / Dr. Ali Kareem / Professor Ericson / Kronick: Vic Perrin {You know, the Control Voice from The Outer Limits}
Deen / Baron Heinrich Von Freulich / Perkins: Everett Sloane {AHP, Twilight Zone, and many many TV and Movie shows.}
Jade / Dreena Hartman: Cathy Lewis {Molly of Fibber McGee & Molly fame.}
Almost everyone else: Henry Corden {2nd Voice of Fred Flintstone, and many many character roles for over 50 years}

Trivia Notes of Interest:

    * Jonny Quest was initially to be named "Chip Balloo"
    * The ending title sequence opens with clips comprised of the original 2 minute pilot.
    * ABC canceled the show do to budgetary concerns and not do to ratings.
    * Jonny Quest eventually would run on all (3) networks
    * The Original Title was to be: Quest File 037 {As is seen in Episode 1 dossier files in the upper right corner ... also see image above.}
    * Dr. Zin was the only reoccurring villain and the Quest Team's Arch Nemesis. Although he never confronted them in person he controlled scenarios from behind the scenes.
    * Joseph Barbera became interested in a life like action adventure cartoon after having seen: James Bond "Dr. No"
    * Doug Wildey was a comic book and strip artist who was asked to create this type of show.
    * Bandit was initially to be either a Cheetah or a Monkey
    * Quest Gadgets and Vehicles were based on concepts and ideas in Modern Science Magazine.
    * Doctor Quest can speak at least 3 other languages besides English. He has demonstrated his vocabulary knowledge of Chinese, Dutch, and Po-Ho.
    * Race Bannon was born in Wilmette, Illinois.
    * Quest Compound is located on Palm Key Island, Florida.
    * Hadji was one of the first ethnic cartoon characters.
    * Race Bannon's real name is Roger and worked as an operative for "Intelligence One" prior to being assigned as Bodyguard/Tutor to Jonny Quest.
    * Episode 9: Double Danger was the first show to have been produced.
    * Doctor Quest was voiced by two separate actors. Originally by John Stephenson for six episodes and then by Don Messick.
    * John Stephenson also did the voice of Mr. Slate {Flintstones} and was the Narrator for Dragnet 1967 including the infamous "Blue Boy" episode entitled: "LSD STORY"
    * Don Messick did both Bandit and later Doctor Quest. He also did the voices or Astro {Jetsons} & Scooby-Doo, Boo Boo Bear, & Ranger Smith.
    * Danny Bravo (Hadji) appeared in the Magnificent Seven.
For Jonny Quest Fans Everywhere, PtE is proud to include the original season in our section of Cult Television shows.

Wow - you were that sheltered growing up! :lol: Jonny Quest is legendary in the annals of animation for breaking so many ground rules. Hell, his home was supposed to be in the Florida Keys - this should have been mandatory watch for a young FLA boy.

Dude........... you really are a n00b.
This show kicks ass.
Now this was a REAL cartoon, that had alot of action. :twisted:

I remember it fondly as a child. I used to always get excited when it was coming on, as it didn't come on all that often.
It used to come on sandwiched between other cartoons and stuff on Saturday mornings.

Is there anywhere online where we can see these DrM?
Or are we going to have to get the DVDs.....? (if they are even available, I haven't checked yet)

I know iTunes & Amazon has them for about $1.99 an episode.
YouTube has them - in Portugese :lol:

It is available - since 2004 - on DVD for around $30.00

You can rent it on NetFlixt
Amazon = $31.95
DeepDiscount = $29.85
DVDPlanet = $30.95

Wally Mart is about the same as Amazon. Best Buy is nearer to $35.00

Cable/Satellite: It runs M ~ F @ 10:30PM on Boomerang.

Aw, HELL YEAH!!!

Jonny Quest is my favorite made-for-TV cartoon EVER! Often times, it looked like a comic book come to life. There was some real detailed drawings and this show was a big part of my Saturday mornings.

I own the DVD set and there are a few extras on it. It is a good quailty set.

I look forward to providing feedback on these episodes.

Thanks Mr. Whoopee! Jonny Quest is a perfect fit for this board. Guys, nice job on the artwork, too!

I can't believe this board doesn't have a million members. We have some awesome Cult & Classics here. I can't keep up with everything.

Ah, my bad. I stand corrected. But still - you never heard of Jonny Quest? Man, that is hard to believe. Even my daughters friends know who the hell Jonny Quest and Hadji are.

I will certainly have to get this DVD release.
The sad part is, something like this would never happen in todays world.

Some obvious "stereotypes" would never fly today.

I am stoked about getting these on DVD very soon.
I don't believe that my local Wal-Mart has them in store, but I am figuring that Best Buy does, and I will make that trek soon to pick these up.

Well, I will tell you, unless one knows the address it is hard as hell to find! I was in St. Louis the beginning of the week (I donated bone marrow, which I will go into detail in a blog post if I ever get it done....) and tried to log into PTE and could not pull it up. I tried all the cult shows to see if it would pull up that way and then PTE, etc. Nothing, so I don't know how others are able to latch on....

on another note, gotta
LOVE Jonny Quest!!!! I grew up with this show and always loved it from the start. I never watched too many of the updated version, but it looked to be pretty good as well....vague memory of that though....this is a very neat addition!
Thanks PJ!

I think its going to be tough to find in a store. I'd bet you're going to have to buy it online somewhere.

Note to DrM or Phineas........................

When are we going to get some more episodes put up here for viewing (and reviewing)?

I am about to watch the last of the ones here, and I am wondering when I will get my next JQ fix, hopefully in the next 12 - 48 hours. :clap:
That is, if they are even available.

Well........... its election night here.
Nothing could be more boring, and as a fluke, I am not playing poker.

So essentially all tv has stopped also, and I need some entertainment. :(

That means I need to get some new JQ episodes to watch if possible. :twisted:

Quick note to all members -

Late last week I tried to view a few of these episodes through the embedded links/players, and for some reason the "AOL" site where we had them linked from was down.

As of today,Monday morning 1:40 am eastern time, it is still "down".
I do not know whether or not they are only blocking the embedding so we can't view them here, or whether or not the JQ episodes have been pulled down completely.

Perhaps we will have to dig up another source for these episodes. :(

There are quite a few of these on youtube though, and many of them are linked here in our JQ section also. 8)

Always the problem with "A - OH - Hell" They randomly shuffle thier files and kill embedded links, which is just plain silly. If you don't want people to link to them, don't give them the option. :wtf:

I'll see what I can track down for these.

OK - AOL still has these but as Amazon $1.95 an episode downloads. :x It may take some time to track down some other outlets.

Just as a heads up to those here interested.................

I have unearthed a select few of these Jonny Quest episodes online.

Look here ~~~~~~~> http://tv.blinkx.com/show/jonny-quest/a ... XRSn4Lzzyg

Maybe DrMoreau will see what he can do with those. It appears to be a link to "Megavideo", but yet a search of that Megavideo site turns up nothing.

Regardless, theres a handful of eps in that link, so you can get your JQ fix on, if you don't have the DVDs, like me. :oops:
I think they are mixed in with a few of the newer episodes as well.
Maybe we can find some more soon.

Jonny Quest was one animated show I couldn't get into when I first saw it many years ago but I may give it another try since I found the dvds at Big Lots.

Greatest 30 minute Toon ever....followed by 1967 Spidey Set. "Robot Spy" is all time fav. Loved the tone and energy that was set in the pilot.

If you guys like Johnny Quest, you should check out his appearances on an episode of Family Guy and the Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law pilot "Bannon Custody Battle".

Here's their appearance on Family Guy:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=879_1181931137

And here's the full Harvey Birdman episode where Race Bannon tries to get custody of Johnny and Hadj. Might need to turn up your volume on this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch1F82sxZ8c

I'm going through the Harvey Birdman episodes right now, highly recommended if you're a fan of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
