Episode 10: Shadow of the Condor

Image

Original Air Date: November 20, 1964
Writer: Charles Hoffman
Director: Paul Sommer

Bolivia: When engine trouble forces the Quest's jet to land in the middle of the Andes, they discover an oddly out of place landing strip complete with Bavarian Castle. Its owner is Heinrich Von Freulich, hunter of condors and an Ace Pilot of World War I. He officially retired with 84 kills to his name and was hoping for an even 100 ... and he's just one dog-fight shy.

With as much bad luck as the Quest Team has with their plane, it's a wonder they didn't all die a fiery death. Yet again, Race should taken a better look at the oil leak - duh! It's a plane Race, not a car or boat.

This aside, they miraculously find a small landing strip in the Andes which allows Race just enough room to land their Jet on. Of course, their is also this odd Hapsburg castle and WWI aircraft here too. It's owner, Heinrich Von Freulich and his little Dachshund. Once a great aviator, his current occupation or hobby is shooting the Condors that fill the skies around his castle. But soon he'll have a better target. After all, if Race can land a jet on a tiny runway - he must be a heck of a pilot, right?

A nice sinister plot that culminates into a dogfight with the Baron & Race. Just one small hitch, Race doesn't get to have any bullets. A fun adventure that once again lets you know that Race may not be the worlds best mechanic, but he sure knows how to kick some animated tail feathers.

8!

The Quest crew make an emergency landing in the Andes mountains. The very convenient landing strip they utilize belongs to an old World War I flying ace who happens to have some old planes around and tricks Race into a dogfight. I rate this as highly as I do because the animation is just incredible. The artwork is right out of a comic book and really demonstrates what could separate "Jonny Quest" from other Saturday Morning cartoon fare. Well Hell, actually what separated it from 95% of all other television shows of its time. It's really remarkable and is the polar opposite of the "Double Danger" episode that preceded it.

My Rating: 9 - Excellent

Could possibly be one of the best episodes of the series. It's mano a mano in this one Baron, and ya gonna get your tail
feathers kicked, royally.

Another pure escapism-no sane aviator would fly with both goggles and a monacle! Besides they used him again as the Bald headed foreign agent in the Norwegion gargoyle epsiode...actually he does get his 100th kill-the condor instead of race Bannon...and crashes into a mountainside.... :bell:
