Nice way to kick off the show. We get the whole James Bond feel out of it. What is particularly striking about this cartoon is both the art work and the attention to detail. When stuff blows up it leaves debris behind - not just a powder residue explosion.

This episode is fun because we get to see the profile brief on all our main characters, except for Hadji. Either he wasn't around yet or was off somewhere else at the time.

Some interesting notes on this episode:

1) Race isn't wearing his his trademark side swipe shirt, it is a regular Polo Shirt and he is wearing White PF Flyer deck shoes like Jonny. In the rest of the series, he wears his strapped, buckskin MOD boots.

2) This episode is supposed to coincide with the first manned Moon Launch/Landing, which would actually place this episode in July of 1969 - 5 years in the future from its time of broadcast.

All in all a fun tale about lasers, computers, secret agents and sinister bad guys.

9! {No Hadji :(}

This is a good episode. One of Doc Savage's greatest adventures takes place in the Sargasso Sea and I've always thought it was a fantastic locale, full of atmosphere.

The story is simple and was probably easy for kids to follow. Ships are being blown up in the Sargasso Sea. Once on the scene, Race Bannon and Jonny explore an old ship and run into the Lizard Men who are conducting laser beam experiments. There's lots of high-tech boats, a submarine, some sleek aircraft and plenty of action. The indication that this is not a cartoon made today is evident by the gunplay! The bad guys actually shoot rifles at Jonny and Race. A kid being shot at? Can you imagine that happening in cartoons made today?!?

The backgrounds and still shots are pretty amazing and seeing the styles of the different animators is interesting. The theme and music is fantastic spy-flavored stuff.

My rating: 9 - Excellent

I just watched "The Mystery of the Lizard Men", in the JQ videos thread.
My advice is catch them while you can, as normally they don't stay online too long in one place.
Here is the chance to catch a few of them and get introduced to the series.

It seriously has been at least 25 years since I have seen any of the Quest adventures.
This was a great start to the series.
Laser beams, rockets, plenty of boat jumping and chases, and a few shootouts!
We get to meet all of the typical crew, Jonny, Race, and Dr. Quest, even little Bandit.

The only noteworthy exception was the absence of Hadji.

7 from this corner.

I finally got around to watching this and all I can say is, "Meh." I gave it a four.

Watch some others, Cyril - they get better when Hadji comes on board.
