Kolchak: The Night Stalker ran on ABC Television in the United States from October 1974 until April of 1975. It was based on the Original made for TV movie, "The Night Stalker" and the name stuck around with the series. Although it ran for only (1) season, it set the leg-work for many later series including: X-Files.

Originally written by Jeffrey Rice as, "The Kolchak Chronicles," it was never published but instead developed for television during the Mystery Wave that engulfed American TV in the 1970s. The Original movie was such a hit, it of course spawned a sequel, "The Night Strangler." This too was well received and those clever TV folk decided to invest in a series based on the intrepid Carl Kolchak played by Darren McGavin in both movies and the series run.

Below is the Cast of Characters that regularly haunted the set as cast:
Carl Kolchak ............... Darren McGavin {Seersucker clad Reporter working for the Independent News Service.}
Tony Vincenzo ........... Simon Oakland {The often uptight and ever watchful Editor-In-Chief.}
Ron Updyke .............. Jack Grinnage {The annoying rival reporter that is often at odds with Kolchak.}
Miss Emily/Edith ......... Ruth McDevitt {The elderly writer of the Miss Emily column and Carl's best research assistant.}

The made for TV movies drew the highest ratings ever for the time, thus spawning the short-lived classic series. You can pick up both TV movies in a single DVD for about $9 at any Best Buy or Target. If you're a fan of this series, I would definitely pick this one up!

Now this is one that I truly don't remember. (I am 36)

But I see picking up the series soon enough, it sounds like something I would like. Its not necessarily my "type of thing", but it sounds interesting enough.

Okay, I'm in my early 40s and I remember watching it as a kid. It scared the hell out of me!

I have rewatched a half-dozen or so recently and they can still be creepy.

Out of curiousity, can you get all these on DVDs?

I am certain you can get the series, but does it include the movies, and what kind of price are we talking here?

Yeah, you can collect all the old Kolchak episodes on DVD's, even the made for TV movies. The box set can be picked up for around $25 while the TV movies are priced around $9 for the double DVD.

Was in my local Wal-Mart the other night, and I looked briefly for this.
Needless to say, no luck.

I will look again this week, and if I still can't snag it there, then I guess I will have to stop at the nearest BestBuy.
I am sure they have it on hand.

I am looking forward to seeing this, hopefully I will own it soon.

Somewhat conventional but better than average SCI Fi series--too bad it lasted for about 10 epsidoes-either they could think up new material or the budget got cut for new epsiodes.... :twisted:

Well - it lasted for 20 episodes actually before McGavin got fed up with the whole never ending script changes and ridiculous hours. Some interesting behind the scenes situations as well, one of my favorites is the following:

Spoiler

The Trevi Collection - Lara Parker is hired to play Madeline a model who later we learn is a witch. Seems a logical choice as Lara had played, Angelique, a witch, for 4 years on the soap opera, "Dark Shadows." Basically, this is what she was known for and had/has a cult following. During her reveal scene, McGavin told her she was doing it all wrong and gave her advice on, "How to play a witch."
